Lifestyle Guidelines

LIFESTYLE GUIDELINES FOR URBAN STORY VOLUNTEERS/INTERNS

Urban Story Ministries has been called to reach the least of these through evangelistic ministry. We do home visits where we pray, prophesy, heal the sick, and meet the needs of the people. It is an intensive ministry that requires a holy lifestyle. Our goal is to see people in forgotten neighborhoods find their purpose and rise above adversity. We equip believers in spiritual gifts and sound biblical doctrine, so they can work as the body and engage in the process of transformation. This calling requires a fully submitted walk with Jesus Christ and sound biblical understanding. Becoming an Urban Story Volunteer/Intern is an important role and should be handled with great care. We have created some guidelines to help you understand our expectations of volunteers in this ministry.

Our lives should be actively displaying the fruits of the Holy Spirit as depicted in Galatians 5:22-23, “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” This is how we show people the love of Jesus and change the brokenness we see in the world. We need to be “the salt” of the earth and the only way to do that is by being different from the world.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR LEADERSHIP
We created our leadership guidelines off of what Paul said to Timothy in 1 Timothy 3: 8-13:
8 “Likewise deacons must be reverent, not double-tongued, not given too much wine, not greedy for money, 9 holding the mystery of the faith with a pure conscience. 10 But let these also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons, being found blameless. 11 Likewise, their wives must be reverent, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all things. 12 Let deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. 13 For those who have served well as deacons obtain for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.”

RELATIONSHIPS
Marriage
In keeping a pure heart before the Lord we follow the Biblical standards for sex. From the very beginning God states clearly that He designed marriage to be between a man and a woman. Genesis 2:24: “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” The Bible teaches us that the only safe place for sex is within the confines of marriage. 1 Corinthians 6:18: “Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.” Sexual immorality such as fornication and adultery must not be practiced by Urban Story volunteers.
Divorce
Marriage is a forever decision that two people make and divorce should not be an option in most cases except for sexual immorality, physical or sexual abuse, danger to children. Outside of that God gives several ways to keep your marriage healthy such as when he said for men to love their wives and that women are to respect their husbands. We see marriage as a valuable union and healthy families as a blessing from God.
We do not judge anyone but reserve the right to refuse any volunteer from serving who is currently engaged in the process of divorce or who is experiencing major marital problems. Any person who is currently engaged in marital counseling for these issues must complete the process with the counselor before serving in the ministry of Urban Story.
Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity
The Bible forbids same-sex relationships and even calls it an abomination in Leviticus 20:13. Our volunteers must not engage in any type of relationships like this or encourage this behavior. Influence given by becoming a part of Urban Story should not be used as a means to encourage behavior that does not align with the word of God. There are two genders, one male and one female. The ideology that states there are more genders is false and a volunteer must not engage in these ideas.

Abortion
Abortion is the murder of an innocent child. We believe life begins at conception, we in no way believe in abortion. Urban Story volunteers are to reject any ideology surrounding the abortion of a child. We take this very seriously because there are many people in our ministry who become pregnant in difficult situations and we do not want volunteers to in any way encourage this type of choice.

2. SUBSTANCE ABUSE
Drugs & Alcohol
The Bible says, “It is good not to eat meat or drink wine or do anything that causes your brother to stumble.” Romans 14:21 We must be careful as leaders about how we conduct ourselves. We are representing Jesus Christ and we need to live above reproach in order to prevent our brother or our sister from stumbling and falling into sin. The nature of this ministry is dealing with people who are abusing substances such as alcohol and drugs. We cannot advise someone not to drink alcohol if we drink ourselves or to stop doing drugs if we are doing them ourselves. As an Urban Story volunteer you should not be using drugs or alcohol.

3. ACCOUNTABILITY
This ministry does require openness with leadership. Being that this ministry is high in spiritual warfare; any open doors to the enemy in your life need to be closed. If you have open doors or hidden sins, the devil will be after you in those areas when you begin to do the works of ministry. According to James, we are to confess our sins to each other for healing. We want you to become the most fruitful minister you can be and we believe allowing fellowship and accountability is a great part of that. You must be open to instruction and willing to correct areas of potential pitfalls in your life.

CONCLUSION
Urban Story leadership expects you to take these guidelines seriously. We believe God is calling us to live as examples of Christ and as a volunteer we want you to be the most Christ-like version of yourself that you can be. This will not only be fulfilling to you but also to those around you. We are excited to have you join our team but we do reserve the right to disqualify a volunteer at any time for not meeting these standards.
If anyone is struggling with any of these issues we would love to work with them in the restoration process to help prepare them to volunteer with Urban Story in the future. We encourage these to join Urban Story Collective and our Kingdom Builders Program.
